When you feel that you've failed

READ: Each one has his own gift from God, one in this manner and another in that.

-1 Corinthians 7:7

Winston Churchill flunked qualifying exams three consecutive years when trying to enter Sandhurst, the military institution. In particular, he could not seem to grasp Latin, which is astonishing when one reads the books of this masterly practitioner of the English language. But then, Thomas Edison was once at the bottom of his class, Albert Einstein flunked math and was called "mentally slow", and Henry Ford was written off by one teacher as "a student who shows no promise." Each of us has speacial God-given gifts, but sometimes we speak disparagingly of our gifts, viewing them as inferior to others' gifts. Using the gift God has given you may be the portal through which you must pass before new opportunities are revealed. Performing your present duties well could be the key to finding an exciting new spiritual dimension in your life. - Fred Bauer

Pray: Father, I've been guilty of coveting the gifts You've given others while disparaging the ones You've given me. Help me know what You've created me to do and give me opportunities to do it.

DO: Pick a talent you haven't developed or have left behind. Look for a class to take or a group to join that will help you renew that interest and develop that skill.

When God is silent

Read: Men listened to me and waited, and kept silence for my counsel.

-Job 29:21

REFLECT: Sometimes, I get frustrated with those seemingly endless seasons when God is so silent it's easy to doubt that He's ever spoken at all. During those times, I try to reflect on the many ways I've heard God's voice in the past, times when He has:

  • directed, corrected, and loved me through the voice of a family member, a friend, a teacher or a preacher;
  • guided my steps through changes in circumstances;
  • spoken His foregiveness through the timely reading of a perfect passage of Scripture;
  • moved me to laughter and tears through the writing of gifted authors;
  • and in prayer, stopped my whirling world to sit with me in silence and fill my heart with His perfect peace.

Actually, those silences...they're the most precious times of all.

-Lucile Allen

PRAY: Thank You for trusting me with those silent seasons, Father. I'll try to receive those silences as gifts and worship You in them.

DO: Sit in silence with God until you see Him reflected in the stillness of your heart and mind.

When you haven't had time for God

Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.

-Luke 6:12 (NIV)

REFLECT: My friend Martha was telling me why her six-year-old son wanted to give up piano lessons so soon after he'd started. "He said he just doesn't have time to practice every day."

"How long did his teacher ask him to practice?" I asked.

"Fifteen minutes!"

We laughed at the idea of a little boy too busy to practice the piano a mere fifteen minutes a day. What on earth could he have to do that was so important?

But later I began to wonder. Does God also laugh - but sadly - at me when I think I don't have fifteen minutes to give to Him every day? What else do I have to do that is so important?

-Patricia Houck Sprinkle

Father, nothing I need to do is more important than spending time with You. Please make it something in my heart that I want to do more than anything else, not something I have to do.

Lay this book aside and pick up your Bible. Use you concordance to find a passage that expresses your love for God in a meaningful way.

Acknowledge Gods' Love

You, God ...created everything

and it is for Your pleasure

that they exist and were created

Revelation 4:11 NLT

It doesn't say God hs love. It says God is love.

Love is the essence of his character. God created you as an object of his love. You were made to be loved by God-that's your number one purpose.

God didn't need to love you. He wasn't lonely. He didn't need servants. He wasn't bored. God created humans because he wanted to love us.

We were planned for his pleasure.

The Lord takes pleasure in his people.

"Your distress about life might mean you have been living for the wrong reason, not that you have no reason for living"

-Tom O'Connor, person with ARC

   Many of us didn't look very closely at our lives until AIDS came along. All of a sudden, our lives have become more important, our time more precious. So, we decide to do some self-examining.

   Often, we don't like what we see. How we're living doesn't match our ideals. We may discover that w're still trying to please our parents or get back at them. Or we try to avoid failure by not trying at all. We may discover that we still fight a feeling of not belonging, or being different.

   Now, AIDS gives us a chance to stop and listen to our inner voice, that voice encouraging us to move toward what's real. AIDS says, do it now. Be as true to yourself as you can possibly be. Stop living for your parents, or your lover, or your children. Stop trying to do what you think others want you to do.

I am an original. I have my own reason for being. I love discovering my true purpose, my true self. Every moment of today I will try to be true to myself.

What does faith mean for my everyday life?

Genesis 15:6

"Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord declared him righteous because of his faith".

Romans 3:24-25

"Now God in his gracious kindness declares us not guilty. He has done this through Christ Jesus, who has freed us by taking away our sins. For God sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and to satisfy God's anger against us. We are made right with God when we believe that Jesus shed his blood, sacrificing his life for us. God was being entirely fair and just when he did not punish those who sinned in former times".

Faith is our lifeline to God. Sin breaks our relationship with God because a holy God cannot live with unholy people. But when we accept Jesus as Savior an ask him to forgive our sins,our simple act of faith makes us righteous in God's sight.
